UK retailers get certified vending machine list
The operator behind the UK’s Deposit Return Scheme has unveiled the initial roster of approved Reverse Vending Machines (RVMs) eligible for use by retailers, marking a key milestone before the program’s official rollout on 1 October 2027.
Inclusion on this verified list confirms each machine complies with the technical specifications necessary for participation in the scheme.
Businesses planning to acquire or lease an RVM are encouraged to consult the official registry before finalizing their selection.
Every machine undergoes rigorous evaluation against 77 distinct criteria to earn certification, ensuring retailers can trust both the machines’ reliability and their compatibility with the DRS infrastructure.
An independent assessment body oversaw the certification process, which scrutinized both technical performance and operational capabilities—including container identification, fraud protection, and system integration.

According to Davies, certification verifies that approved models satisfy all operational standards, offering retailers clearer decision-making as they evaluate their options.
Alongside the certified machine list, Exchange For Change has introduced standardized RVM Artwork Guidance to promote uniformity across all participating machines. The new directives outline approved branding, signage, and user instructions for certified models, helping retailers establish easily identifiable return points where consumers can deposit containers and claim their 20p refund.
The organization will maintain ongoing support as preparations advance, including assistance through grant funding available to qualifying small retailers to facilitate RVM purchases.
These developments form part of Exchange For Change’s efforts to ensure a seamless introduction of the Deposit Return Scheme, with the certified machine list and design standards playing central roles in the preparations.
